Liquid color, masterbatch, and matching in-house

P.A.T. Products supplies color two ways and matches across both. The choice between them follows your process.

For cast polyurethane and other liquid resin systems, we supply liquid color dispersions: pigment pre-dispersed in a liquid carrier, metered into your resin during processing. For TPU and other thermoplastics that run through injection molding or extrusion, we supply masterbatch: solid color concentrate in pellet form, let down into the resin at the machine.

We supply REPI liquid color dispersions and match color in-house in the United States, to PANTONE, RAL, Federal Standard 595, or a physical sample, then ship in the package size your operation runs. The result is one color partner across a shop that runs both cast PU and thermoplastics, with the deliverable changing to fit each process.

Made in the United States, Berry Amendment compliant

Our liquid color is matched and produced in the United States. It is Berry Amendment, REACH, RoHS, and California Proposition 65 compliant, and compliance documentation is available on request. Masterbatch is colored into a carrier resin that may be imported, so its country of origin follows that resin rather than the compounding step.

For military and government footwear and textile programs, our liquid color qualifies as a Berry Amendment compliant component. If you supply into defense or government contracts and need domestically produced, Berry-compliant color, tell us the standard and the resin system, and we will confirm what we can supply.

Liquid color for cast PU and liquid resin systems

Cast polyurethane is processed as a low-viscosity liquid before it cures, and the mixing window is short. Color has to disperse fully in that window without disturbing the cure. Liquid dispersions are built for that: low in viscosity, they meter cleanly into the resin or the mix head and develop full color fast.

Our liquid dispersions are organic and inorganic pigments held in a carrier vehicle. The carrier is the part that decides which system the color is suited to, so we match the carrier to your chemistry. Plasticizer-based carriers cover cast elastomers, flexible PVC and plastisol, and integral-skin foam. Polyether polyol-based carriers serve cast PU and reaction systems where the colorant is metered against the polyol side. We formulate the carrier to your resin and to any UV or weatherability requirement the part carries.

Coloring TPU and thermoplastics: masterbatch

TPU and other thermoplastic elastomers are colored with masterbatch. Masterbatch is pigment pre-compounded into a solid pellet carrier resin matched to your material. The pellets feed into the press or extruder, melt with the resin, and disperse as the part is molded or extruded. The process is solid-state, with no liquid handling at the machine.

The process and the finished product differ from the liquid dispersions used for cast PU. Liquid color is metered into a liquid resin before cure. Masterbatch is melted into a thermoplastic during molding or extrusion. The format follows the process: liquid systems take liquid color, thermoplastic processes take masterbatch.

We color-match across both. For a shop running cast PU on liquid color and TPU on masterbatch, we hold the same color target across the two deliverables, so a part made by either route reads the same. See coloring TPU and thermoplastics for more.

Color matching as a service

Matching is the core of what we do. You supply a target, we formulate against it, confirm the match, and ship. Our technicians work from spectrophotometry and in-house trials. We match to PANTONE, RAL Classic, Federal Standard 595, hex, a physical chip, or a part you send us, and we reverse-match a color you already buy from another supplier so you can move a shade without re-specifying it.

We account for heat profile, UV exposure, process method, and resin compatibility when we build a color, because the same target behaves differently across cast PU, TPU, PVC, and an epoxy floor. Full detail and the match request form are on the color match service page.

Epoxy flooring and coatings color

The liquid dispersions also color epoxy and coatings systems where liquid addition is standard. That covers poured and broadcast epoxy flooring, decorative coatings, and PU coating systems. Color is metered into the resin component the same way it is for cast PU, and we match to the same standards. Fast-cure and weatherable coating chemistries carry their own carrier and stability requirements, so tell us the system and the exposure the finish has to survive, and we formulate to it.

We match and produce color in-house in the United States and ship throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Lead time is about one week for color matches and commercial orders, and colors are available in 5 kg, 12.5 kg, and 20 kg pails, drums, and totes. We can supply carriers based on low-viscosity plasticizer, polyether polyol, polypropylene glycol, Benzoflex, or vegetable oil, and UV stabilizers, antistats, fluorescent colors, and tints are available. Can you reverse-match a color I already buy from another supplier?

Yes. If you already buy a color as a liquid or as masterbatch from another source, we can match it so you can move the shade without re-specifying it. Send the reference or a sample and tell us the resin and process.

What is the minimum order, and can I get a sample?

We match in-house and ship samples for evaluation before any commercial commitment, with no large minimum to start a match. Send a color reference and the resin system through the color match form or by phone, and a color technician will be in touch, usually the same business day.
