Sulfonamides, citrates, and specialty plasticizers

A plasticizer lowers the stiffness of a polymer or resin so it flows during processing and stays flexible in service. The plasticizer you pick sets how well that flexibility holds up against heat, solvents, migration, and time.

P.A.T. Products carries two plasticizer chemistries that cover different jobs. The ProFlex line is sulfonamide chemistry: toluenesulfonamide and benzenesulfonamide grades used to plasticize and improve flow in amino, epoxy, and polyurethane resins, hot-melt and other adhesives, printing inks, and polyamide. Citriflex 84 is a citrate ester, acetyl tributyl citrate, a non-phthalate and bio-based plasticizer for cellulosics, PVC, acrylics, inks, and adhesives.

ProFlex sulfonamide plasticizers

Sulfonamide plasticizers are polar compounds that plasticize resins many general-purpose plasticizers cannot soften well. That polarity is what lets them work into polyamide, cellulose acetate, shellac, and amino resins, and it is why they earn a place in coatings and adhesives that need to resist oils and greases.

The ProFlex grades cover both the toluenesulfonamide and benzenesulfonamide families. N-ethyl toluenesulfonamide grades, supplied as a liquid, plasticize polyamide and cellulosic resins and act as a dye solvent and pigment dispersant. N-butyl benzenesulfonamide, a liquid, is a polyamide and cellulose plasticizer used in nylon, hot-melt and rubber-latex adhesives, printing inks, and surface coatings, with low-temperature flexibility, good mold release, and low water absorption. An ortho/para toluenesulfonamide grade, the parent amide, is used in amino resins such as melamine-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde laminates, and as a reactive plasticizer in epoxy, polyurethane, and melamine systems. A toluenesulfonamide-formaldehyde resin, supplied as a solid and as a solution, is used where a harder sulfonamide resin modifier is called for.

The tosyl chloride specialty

Alongside the plasticizers, P.A.T. Products stocks para-toluenesulfonyl chloride (tosyl chloride, CAS 98-59-9). This one is a reactive intermediate, not a plasticizer. It is a sulfonyl chloride building block used in tosylation and in fine-chemical and coatings synthesis, where it functionalizes molecules or resins through the reactive acid chloride.

It is supplied as a solid, in kilogram and pound packaging. If you use tosyl chloride as a synthesis reagent and want a stocked North American source, we can supply it with the documentation your process requires.

Citriflex 84 (ATBC): the non-phthalate option

Citriflex 84 is acetyl tributyl citrate, or ATBC (CAS 77-90-7). It is a non-phthalate, bio-based plasticizer with a long commercial record as the citrate ester of choice for demanding work. It is made by esterifying citric acid, a tricarboxylic acid from fermentation, with butanol, then acetylating it. The result is a low-volatility plasticizer with strong compatibility and a measurable bio-based carbon content by ASTM D6866.

It fits cellulosics and nitrocellulose lacquers and films, nitrocellulose food-packaging inks, PVC that needs a non-phthalate plasticizer including food-contact film, and acrylics, adhesives, and personal-care formulations.

Non-phthalate and regulatory positioning

Phthalate plasticizers carry a growing regulatory load. DEHP, DBP, and BBP are restricted under EU REACH, California Prop 65, and CPSC rules for children's products, and the regulated list keeps expanding. Formulators moving off phthalates need a plasticizer that performs and clears the documentation. ATBC is the direct answer: non-phthalate, bio-based, and food-contact capable, which is why it shows up in medical PVC, food-packaging film, toys, and nitrocellulose food-packaging inks.

On the sulfonamide side, the picture is steady. The toluenesulfonamide and benzenesulfonamide plasticizer grades are not on the EU SVHC Candidate List and are not REACH Annex XVII restricted. Food-contact documentation is available for the grades that carry it on request. We do not guess on compliance.
