What sulfonamide plasticizers solve

Sulfonamide plasticizers solve a problem general-purpose plasticizers struggle with: softening polar, hard-to-plasticize resins like polyamide, cellulose acetate, shellac, and amino resins. The same polarity that lets them work into those resins gives the finished coating or adhesive good resistance to oils and greases. That is the reason these grades hold a steady place in inks, adhesives, and resin systems.

The ProFlex grades

N-ethyl toluenesulfonamide

A clear liquid that plasticizes polyamide and cellulosic resins and works as a dye solvent and pigment dispersant. Low solubility in petroleum hydrocarbons suits grease- and oil-resistant coatings and adhesives.

N-butyl benzenesulfonamide

A liquid plasticizer for polyamide and cellulose, used in nylon, hot-melt and rubber-latex adhesives, printing inks, and surface coatings. Gives low-temperature flexibility, mold release, and low water absorption.

Ortho/para toluenesulfonamide

The parent amide, a solid, used in melamine-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde laminates and as a reactive plasticizer in epoxy, polyurethane, and melamine systems. Its N-H can react into the cured network.

Toluenesulfonamide-formaldehyde resin

A harder sulfonamide resin modifier, supplied as a solid and as a solution.

Where sulfonamide plasticizers fit

  • Polyamide and nylon: plasticizing nylon, monofilament, and fiber for flexibility, processing, and low water absorption.
  • Adhesives: hot-melt, PVAc, and rubber-latex adhesives that need tack, grease resistance, or low-temperature flexibility.
  • Printing and metal-decorating inks: as plasticizers and resin modifiers in ink systems.
  • Amino, epoxy, and polyurethane resins: the ortho/para amide grade reacts in, building permanent flexibility into laminates and cured systems.

ProFlex 9S, the reactive grade

Two of these grades, the N-ethyl and N-butyl monomers, are non-reactive plasticizers that sit in the polymer and lower stiffness. The ortho/para amide is different: its N-H can condense into amino resins and consume isocyanate in polyurethane systems, so it can become part of the cured network. When you formulate with the reactive grade, account for that functionality in the system rather than treating it as inert. We can provide formulation support.

Are sulfonamide plasticizers reactive?

It depends on the grade. The N-ethyl and N-butyl monomers are non-reactive liquid plasticizers. The ortho/para toluenesulfonamide grade is reactive: its N-H reacts into amino, epoxy, and polyurethane systems.

What resins do sulfonamide plasticizers work in?

Polar resins that general-purpose plasticizers struggle with, including polyamide and nylon, cellulose acetate, shellac, and amino resins, plus use in hot-melt and PVAc adhesives and printing inks.

Can a sulfonamide plasticizer replace a phthalate?

For polar resins and the oil-and-grease resistance sulfonamides provide, they fill a role phthalates do not. For non-phthalate food-contact PVC, ATBC is the better-documented choice. The two cover different jobs.
