A colourless liquid sulfonamide plasticizer for polyamide, polyacetal, polycarbonate and polysulfone. Low-temperature flexibility and low water absorption.
ProFlex 4 is N-butyl benzenesulfonamide, CAS 3622-84-2, supplied as a colourless viscous liquid. The molecular formula is C10H15NO2S, molecular weight 213.30 g/mol, EC number 222-823-6.
It plasticizes engineering thermoplastics that resist most plasticizers: polyacetal, polycarbonate, polysulfone and polyamide. The line data sheet lists what it buys in those systems: better low-temperature flexibility, better finish, heat stability to 80 degrees C, better shape stability through reduced water absorption, and easier release from moulds.
The same polarity that makes it work in nylon makes it a plasticizer for cellulosic resins, and it is used in nylon and monofilament, hot-melt and rubber-latex adhesives, printing inks and surface coatings.
Active matter is 99.0 percent minimum, water is held to 0.1 percent maximum, colour to 30 Pt-Co maximum and acid value to 0.2 mg KOH/g. Viscosity is 150 to 180 mPa.s at 20 degrees C and specific gravity is 1.145 to 1.152 at 20 degrees C. Pour point is minus 30 degrees C, which is where the low-temperature flexibility comes from.
The toxicology block on the data sheet gives an acute oral LD50 in rat of 2000 mg/kg or greater, an Ames test result of not mutagenic, and slow biodegradation.
It is nearly insoluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol and benzene. Water solubility measured by OECD Test Guideline 105 is 0.45 g/l at 20 degrees C, and the octanol/water partition coefficient is log Pow 2.01.
The CAS Registry Number is 3622-84-2. It is also written as N-butylbenzenesulfonamide, NBBS, N-butyl benzene sulfonamide, n-butylbenzenesulphonamide, and benzenesulfonamide N-butyl.

These are specification limits from the technical data sheet, not typical values. Every batch is released against them and the certificate of analysis reports the measured result. We will send the current TDS and the batch documentation your qualification needs.
Tell us the binder system, the property you are targeting, and the volume you expect. We will confirm the grade, send the documentation, and ship a sample from North American stock.
Plasticizing, monofilament and fibre, with low water absorption.

It is specified where the formulation needs low-temperature flexibility, reduced water absorption and better shape stability, easier release from moulds, heat stability to 80 degrees c, and better surface finish.
ProFlex 4 is a liquid at 150 to 180 mPa.s at 20 degrees C and meters cold. Pour point is minus 30 degrees C, so it stays pumpable in an unheated store through winter.
Keep containers tightly closed and upright, in a dry well ventilated place. Water is specified at 0.1 percent maximum, which is a tighter limit than most of the line, so an opened container needs resealing carefully.
Storage: Keep the container tightly closed in a dry, well ventilated place. Containers that have been opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage.
Classified under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard for specific target organ toxicity on repeated exposure category 2 and for acute and chronic aquatic toxicity category 3, signal word Warning. Avoid release to the environment. Read the safety data sheet before handling.
CAS 3622-84-2, EC number 222-823-6. It is a single substance rather than a mixture, so one number covers it. The chemical name is N-butyl benzenesulfonamide and it is commonly written NBBS.
It plasticizes engineering thermoplastics that reject most plasticizers, specifically polyacetal, polycarbonate, polysulfone and polyamide. In those resins it gives low-temperature flexibility, better finish, heat stability to 80 degrees C, reduced water absorption, and easier release from moulds. Tell us the resin and the property you are chasing and we will suggest a level.
Both plasticize nylon and they are chosen on the rest of the property set. ProFlex 4 is the one to look at when low-temperature flexibility, low water absorption and mould release matter, and when the resin is a polyacetal, polycarbonate or polysulfone rather than a polyamide. ProFlex 8 is the broader-compatibility grade and the one that also promotes adhesion. Samples of both ship from stock.
Slowly. The data sheet states slow biodegradation, and the safety data sheet classifies it for chronic aquatic toxicity category 3, harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Avoid release to the environment and treat waste accordingly. If environmental fate is a requirement in your system, ask us about Citriflex 84 and we will send you what the evidence actually supports.
Tell us the volume and we will confirm the pack. We ship samples, drums and larger containers from North American stock, and we will quote freight with the material rather than after it.
Yes. We send the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), Certificate of Analysis (COA), and GHS product label on request, in the current revision. Use Request TDS or SDS above and tell us what your qualification review needs.
