Choosing a non-phthalate plasticizer: where ATBC fits

Phthalate plasticizers built the flexible-PVC industry. They are cheap, effective, and everywhere. They are also under steady regulatory pressure, and for a growing list of applications they are no longer an option. DEHP, DBP, and BBP are restricted under EU REACH, California Prop 65, and CPSC rules for children's products, and the regulated list keeps adding names. If you formulate flexible PVC, cellulosics, or inks for food contact, medical, or consumer use, you have already met this question or you will soon.

The replacement that has held up best across demanding work is acetyl tributyl citrate, ATBC. Here is where it fits and how to tell when it is the right call.

What ATBC is

ATBC, CAS 77-90-7, is a citrate ester. It starts from citric acid, a tricarboxylic acid made by fermentation, esterified with butanol and then acetylated. That gives it two properties that matter on a spec sheet. It is non-phthalate, so it sidesteps the REACH and Prop 65 entries that catch the common phthalates. And it carries a measurable bio-based carbon content by ASTM D6866, which matters when a customer or a retailer is asking for bio-based or sustainable formulation.

On performance, ATBC is a low-volatility plasticizer with strong compatibility. Low volatility shows up as better heat aging and less weight loss in service, so a part plasticized with ATBC holds its flexibility over a longer life than one carrying a more volatile plasticizer.

Where it earns its place

Cellulosics and nitrocellulose are the clearest fit. ATBC plasticizes cellulose acetate and nitrocellulose lacquers and films, and it brings low volatility, resistance to yellowing, and good adhesion to metal. That last point is the reason it has a long record in nitrocellulose food-packaging inks, where the ink sits on a metal or film substrate and cannot afford to yellow or lift.

Flexible PVC is the volume story. When a PVC part has to clear food-contact, medical, or children's-product rules, ATBC is the established non-phthalate choice. Cling and lidding films, blood bags, and IV tubing all use it where DEHP restrictions apply.

Beyond those, ATBC works in acrylics and adhesives where a non-phthalate plasticizer is specified, and it serves as a plasticizer and emollient in personal care, including nail polish and tablet coatings.

How to tell when ATBC is the right call

Start with the regulatory line. If the part has to clear food contact, medical, or children's-product rules, or a customer is asking for non-phthalate or bio-based, ATBC is on the short list by default. There is no point qualifying a plasticizer that the application will reject on documentation.

Then check the performance fit. ATBC is strong on low volatility and compatibility, which makes it a good match for parts that run warm or have to hold flexibility over a long service life. It is widely compatible with PVC and cellulosics, so it slots into existing systems without forcing a rebuild.

The honest counter-case is cost and loading. Citrate esters sit above commodity phthalates on price, so for a part with no regulatory driver and no bio-based ask, the economics may point elsewhere. The way to settle it is to test at your loading, in your system, against the property you actually have to hold.

Where the sulfonamides come in

ATBC is not the only plasticizer that matters for cellulosics and inks. Sulfonamide plasticizers, the toluenesulfonamide and benzenesulfonamide grades, plasticize polyamide and cellulosics too, and they bring oil and grease resistance that citrate esters do not. They are a different tool for a different job. For the non-phthalate, food-contact question specifically, ATBC is the one that clears the documentation.
