A white solid reactive plasticizer for melamine, urea formaldehyde, epoxy and polyurethane systems. The free N-H condenses into the cured network.
ProFlex 9S is ortho/para toluenesulfonamide, CAS 1333-07-9, supplied as a white odourless solid. The molecular formula is C7H9NO2S, molecular weight 171.22. The safety data sheet gives the composition as 20 to 40 percent of the ortho isomer, CAS 88-19-7, and 60 to 80 percent of the para isomer, CAS 70-55-3.
This is the parent amide, and the free N-H is the reason to specify it. Where ProFlex 8 and ProFlex 4 are N-substituted and sit in the polymer without joining it, ProFlex 9S condenses into amino resins and consumes isocyanate in polyurethane systems, so it can become part of the cured network. Account for that functionality in the stoichiometry rather than treating it as inert.
The line data sheet lists it as a plasticizer for melamine and other resins, where it improves stability, flexibility and flow. It is used in low-pressure melamine formaldehyde laminates, in urea formaldehyde resins, and as a reactive plasticizer in epoxy, polyurethane and melamine based systems. Systems reacted with it show improved resistance to oils, solvents and moisture.
The safety data sheet also names use as a fluorescent pigment intermediate, which is one of the traditional outlets for the parent amide.
Melting range is 109 to 113 degrees C and the decomposition temperature is 188 degrees C, so the processing window between melting and decomposition is wide. Water solubility is 5.1 g/l at 25 degrees C and the octanol/water partition coefficient is log Pow 0.6. Vapour pressure at 22 degrees C is below 0.0000003 mm Hg. It is non-flammable as a solid.
It is not classified under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008: no hazard pictogram, no signal word, no hazard statement. Protect it from moisture and wet air to maintain quality.
The CAS Registry Number is 1333-07-9. It is also written as o/p-toluenesulfonamide, toluenesulfonamide, toluene sulfonamide, ortho/para toluene sulphonamide, o-toluenesulfonamide, p-toluenesulfonamide, and TSA.

Typical values from the manufacturer's technical data sheet. They describe the product, they are not a specification. We will send the current TDS and the batch documentation your qualification needs.
Tell us the binder system, the property you are targeting, and the volume you expect. We will confirm the grade, send the documentation, and ship a sample from North American stock.
The classic outlet for the parent amide, improving flexibility and flow.
Reacts into the amino network rather than migrating out of it.
A reactive plasticizer. In polyurethane the N-H consumes isocyanate, so allow for it.
Stability, flexibility and flow, with improved oil, solvent and moisture resistance in the reacted system.
An identified use on the safety data sheet.
It is specified where the formulation needs permanent flexibility that does not migrate out, improved flow in amino resin systems, better oil, solvent and moisture resistance in the reacted network, and a wide window between melting and decomposition.
ProFlex 9S melts at 109 to 113 degrees C and decomposes at 188 degrees C, which leaves a wide working window. Add it where the resin is molten or in solution and give it time to dissolve fully before the cure advances.
The free N-H is reactive. In an amino resin it condenses into the network; in a polyurethane it consumes isocyanate, so the isocyanate index has to allow for it or the cure will run short. Ask us for formulation support before the first trial rather than after it.
Protect the material from moisture and wet air. Keep containers tightly closed and dry, and avoid breathing dust when charging.
Storage: Protect from moisture and wet air to maintain quality. Keep the container tightly closed and dry.
Not classified under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008: no pictogram, no signal word and no hazard statement. Non-flammable as supplied. Read the safety data sheet before handling.
CAS 1333-07-9 identifies the ortho/para mixture, and the safety data sheet also lists the two components: 88-19-7 for the ortho isomer at 20 to 40 percent and 70-55-3 for the para isomer at 60 to 80 percent. The EC number for the mixture is 215-578-1. If a qualification form asks for one number, 1333-07-9 is the one it wants.
Yes, and that is the point of it. It is the parent amide with a free N-H, so it condenses into amino resins and consumes isocyanate in polyurethane systems instead of sitting inertly in the polymer. A plasticizer that reacts in cannot migrate out, which is why it is specified for laminates and cured coatings. Allow for the functionality in the stoichiometry.
It will change it, so plan for it. The N-H reacts with isocyanate, which means the isocyanate index has to be raised to account for the amide or the system will cure short. Tell us the loading you are considering and the isocyanate you are using, and we will work through it with you before you run a batch.
Because it stays put. ProFlex 8 is non-reactive and can migrate over the life of the part; ProFlex 9S becomes part of the cured network, so the flexibility is permanent and the reacted system also picks up better oil, solvent and moisture resistance. ProFlex 8 is the grade to choose when you specifically do not want the plasticizer touching the cure.
A solid. ProFlex 9S is a white odourless powder melting at 109 to 113 degrees C, which is what separates it from ProFlex 8 and ProFlex 4 in handling terms. It is charged as a solid and dissolved into the molten resin or the solution.
Yes. We send the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and Certificate of Analysis (COA) on request, in the current revision. Use Request TDS or SDS above and tell us what your qualification review needs.
