Deuteron XG is a natural biopolymer thickener based on polysaccharides. It dissolves in cold and hot water and gives pseudoplastic solutions that hold across a wide temperature and pH range.

It builds a strong structure viscosity. Viscosity falls when shear is applied and returns as soon as the shear stops, which prevents pigments and fillers settling during storage and keeps the coating from sagging once applied.

This is the untreated powder grade. It hydrates rapidly, which is what makes it prone to lumping, so it is the right choice where the plant has a high shear disperser and wants the straight xanthan rather than a modified or granulated form.

Dosage: 0.1 to 1.0 percent for thickening and gel formation, 0.1 to 0.3 percent to stabilise solids against sedimentation, and 0.1 to 0.5 percent for anti-sagging.

It is specified where the formulation needs general viscosity adjustment, less floating and settling of waxes and pigments, better stability and anti-sagging, and stable gels.

Handling and dispersion

Deuteron XG hydrates rapidly and tends to form lumps. Add it slowly while stirring, then take the mixer to a high shear rate until the dispersion is complete. As soon as the viscosity starts to rise, reduce the speed to avoid drawing in foam. A proper dispersion usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

For easier handling it can be made up as an intermediate. Mix Deuteron XG with a glycol, glycol ether or alcohol of choice at roughly 1 to 1 and disperse to a high viscosity suspension, then add that to the batch.

Thickener solutions based on polysaccharides need protection against fungal and bacterial growth. Any broad-range biocide used in the paint industry is suitable.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Paper bags, 25 kg net.

Storage: 24 months at room temperature in dry conditions. Storage temperature should not exceed 35 °C and relative humidity should not exceed 70 percent.

Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 Deuteron XG is not classified as a dangerous product and does not require hazard labelling. The safety data sheet and the regulatory information sheet carry the detail your review will want.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Deuteron XG lump, and how do I stop it?

It hydrates rapidly, so particles that touch water together swell into a gel skin before they have separated. Add it slowly into the vortex while stirring, then go to high shear until dispersion is complete, and drop the speed once viscosity climbs so you do not beat in foam. Budget 20 to 30 minutes.

Can I pre-mix it to make dosing easier?

Yes, and Deuteron recommends it. Mix XG with a glycol, glycol ether or alcohol at about 1 to 1, disperse to a high viscosity suspension, and dose that intermediate into the batch.

Which grade should I use if I have no high shear disperser?

Deuteron VT 819, which is glyoxal surface treated and disperses under gentle stirring in about five minutes at pH 5 to 7, or the granulated VT 920 and VT 930, which take 10 to 15 minutes at moderate speed. All four are xanthan gum; they differ in how much equipment the incorporation needs.

What pH and solvent levels does it tolerate?

A wide pH range, with depolymerisation and falling viscosity below pH 2 and above pH 12. It tolerates up to 40 percent alcohols or glycol ethers and is insoluble in pure organic solvents. It is stable in anionic and non-ionic systems and can be incompatible in cationic ones.
