Deuteron LE 15P

Powdered antistatic additive for powder coatings, plastics and extrusion. A quaternary ammonium active absorbed onto silica, so it goes where a liquid additive cannot.

Home Products Deuteron Deuteron LE 15P

Deuteron LE 15P is a quaternary ammonium salt absorbed onto a silica carrier. It is a cationic surfactant working as an antistatic agent, and its mechanism is surface migration and orientation.

The carrier is the reason the product exists. Taking a liquid active onto silica turns it into a free-flowing powder, so it can be used in every application where a liquid component cannot: powder coatings, plastics and plastisol, and 100 percent systems.

It is free of solvents and plasticizers, and it was developed particularly for extrusion processes. In liquid systems the active is released during processing, and depending on the formulation the silica carrier has little influence on rheology.

Deuteron's antistatic additives reach resistivity between 1x10^5 and 1x10^9 ohms, which is 100 kilohm to 1 gigaohm, the antistatic range under EN ISO 20345. The value you reach varies with the test system and the test conditions.

Applications

Powder coatings

A solid antistatic for a system that cannot take a liquid.

Plastics and plastisol

Antistatic performance without solvents or plasticizers.

100 percent systems

No carrier solvent entering the formulation.

Extrusion processes

What the grade was particularly developed for.

It is specified where the formulation needs controlled surface and volume resistivity, a solid form usable where liquids are not, freedom from solvents and plasticizers, and little influence on rheology from the silica carrier.

Handling and dispersion

LE 15P can be added at any time. For optimal release of the active it should be processed at higher shear forces or in an extrusion process, which is what frees the quaternary ammonium from the silica.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Fibre drum, 15 kg net.

Storage: 24 months in tightly closed containers at room temperature. Storage temperature should not exceed 35 °C.

Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 Deuteron LE 15P is classified as a dangerous good and must be labelled. Read the safety data sheet before handling. Labelling requirements differ by region, so check the safety data sheet issued for your country.

Frequently asked questions

Why put an antistatic on a silica carrier?

So it can be used as a powder. The active is a liquid quaternary ammonium salt, and a liquid cannot go into a powder coating, a dry plastics compound or an extrusion feed. Absorbing it onto silica turns it into a free-flowing solid that meters like any other powder additive.

Does the silica carrier affect rheology?

Depending on the formulation, little. In liquid systems the active is released during processing and the silica is left behind at a low loading. If rheology is critical, trial it: 18 microns of silica at a few percent is not nothing.

How do I get the best antistatic effect out of it?

Process it at higher shear, or in an extrusion process. The active has to be released from the carrier to migrate to the surface, and shear is what does that. Adding it gently at the end of a batch will underperform.

How much should I use?

Between 1 and 5 percent for most applications. Above 10 percent there is generally nothing more to gain. The exact level depends on the system and the resistivity you are targeting.

Can I get the TDS and SDS for Deuteron LE 15P?

Yes. We send the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), Regulatory Information Sheet, and Conductivity Agents brochure on request, in the manufacturer's current revision. Use Request TDS or SDS above and tell us what your qualification review needs.
