Deuteron VT 819 is a natural biopolymer thickener based on polysaccharides, carrying a glyoxal surface treatment that delays hydration. The delay is the point: the particles disperse before they start to swell, so the material goes in without lumps.

It builds a strong structure viscosity. Viscosity falls under shear and returns when the shear stops, holding pigments and fillers in suspension during storage and stopping a coating sagging after application.

At 2700 mPa.s in a 1 percent solution it is the highest-viscosity xanthan in the Deuteron range, and at approximately 800 g/l it is a dense powder rather than a granule.

Dosage: 0.1 to 1.0 percent for thickening and gel formation, 0.1 to 0.3 percent to stabilise solids against sedimentation, and 0.1 to 0.5 percent for anti-sagging.

It is specified where the formulation needs general viscosity adjustment, less floating and settling of waxes and pigments, better stability and anti-sagging, stable gels, and lump-free incorporation without high shear.

Handling and dispersion

The glyoxal layer dissolves rapidly at basic pH and releases the xanthan to hydrate. Add VT 819 to a system at pH 5 to 7 to keep the dispersion lump free. Once it is dispersed the pH can be taken above 7 without any problem.

Because of the surface treatment it can be dosed under gentle stirring. High shear is not necessary, and the material is usually fully dispersed within five minutes of the pH being adjusted.

Thickener solutions based on polysaccharides need protection against fungal and bacterial growth. Any broad-range biocide used in the paint industry is suitable.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Paper bags, 25 kg net.

Storage: 24 months at room temperature in dry conditions. Storage temperature should not exceed 35 °C and relative humidity should not exceed 70 percent.

Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 Deuteron VT 819 is not classified as a dangerous product and does not require hazard labelling. The safety data sheet and the regulatory information sheet carry the detail your review will want.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the pH matter when adding Deuteron VT 819?

The glyoxal surface layer is what delays hydration, and it dissolves rapidly at basic pH. Adding the powder into a system already above pH 7 releases the xanthan too fast and invites lumps. Add it between pH 5 and 7, disperse, then take the pH wherever the formulation needs it.

How is it different from Deuteron XG?

Both are xanthan gum. XG is untreated powder: it hydrates immediately, tends to lump, and needs 20 to 30 minutes under high shear. VT 819 is surface treated so it disperses under gentle stirring in about five minutes. XG is the lower-cost route if you have the equipment.

How is it different from VT 920 and VT 930?

Those are granulated rather than surface treated, and they take 10 to 15 minutes under moderate stirring. VT 819 is a dense powder at 800 g/l with a higher solution viscosity, 2700 against 2200 mPa.s, and the fastest dispersion of the four once the pH is right.

Does it carry the same food-additive compliance as VT 920 and VT 930?

No. The glyoxal-modified grade is a coatings additive. The food-additive standards listed on VT 920 and VT 930 do not apply to VT 819, so specify one of those grades if that compliance is part of your requirement.
