Deuteron MK-F is a micronized duromeric plastic powder based on polymethylurea. The synthesis produces highly amorphous particles with a comparatively high BET surface area, which is what makes the chemistry work as a matting agent.

As an organic polymer it holds a balance between matting performance, viscosity and mechanical stability that inorganic matting agents do not. It has a low influence on viscosity at the loadings needed to hit a gloss target.

MK-F sits between the other two grades, with a median particle size of 4.6 microns and a dv90 of 10.6 microns. Oil absorption is 278 g per 100 g. It is the grade to reach for when MK reads as texture in the film but MK-F6 costs more matting efficiency than the job needs.

It is insoluble in the solvents commonly used in coatings, temperature resistant beyond 200 °C and briefly beyond 300 °C, and biodegradable.

Dosage: A typical addition range of 1 to 15 percent. The level depends heavily on the binder type, other additives, solvent content and the application parameters, so determine it with a ladder study.

It is specified where the formulation needs a strong matting effect at low viscosity impact, high mechanical and chemical resistance, scratch resistance and resistance to polishing, improved blocking resistance, and a pleasant surface touch.

Handling and dispersion

PMU chemistry is highly compatible across a wide range of systems, so Deuteron MK-F can be incorporated with a high-speed stirrer without specific wetting agents or dispersing aids.

It is shear stable in high shear processes. Do not grind it in a bead mill: the particle size distribution is the product, and milling destroys it.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Paper bag, 10 kg net.

Storage: 24 months at room temperature in dry conditions. Storage temperature should not exceed 35 °C.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose between Deuteron MK, MK-F and MK-F6?

By film thickness and how fine a surface you need. MK is the coarsest at 6.3 microns dv50 and 13.8 dv90, with the highest oil absorption at 325, so it mattes hardest per unit added. MK-F sits at 4.6 and 10.6 microns, MK-F6 at 3.5 and 6.5. Thin films need the finer grades or the coarse particles read as texture.

How much do I need to hit a gloss target?

Somewhere between 1 and 15 percent, and the honest answer is that the number depends on your binder, your solvent content and your application method. Run a ladder study. Tell us the system and the gloss you are targeting and we will suggest where to start it.

Can I bead mill it?

No. It is shear stable in high shear mixing, but a bead mill will grind the particle size distribution away, and that distribution is what produces the matting. A high-speed stirrer is all it needs.

Is polymethylurea a PFAS?

No. Polymethylurea is an organic urea-based thermoset with no fluorine in it, which is why the chemistry is used as a route away from PTFE micronized waxes in coatings.

Will it survive a bake?

It is temperature resistant to over 200 °C, and briefly to over 300 °C, so it holds through normal oven-cured and coil schedules.
