Deuteron WD OPE is a dispersion of micronized oxidized polyethylene wax in water at 46 percent active. Oxidized PE is harder and melts higher than standard polyethylene, at 128 °C against 101 °C, and those two properties are what the grade is bought for.

The hardness and melting point give a marked improvement in anti-blocking and abrasion resistance. It also mattes well and holds high storage stability across a wide range of coating systems.

It has little influence on slip, which separates it from the wax additives specified to reduce friction. Where a surface has to resist blocking without becoming slippery, that combination is difficult to get any other way.

Like WD PE, the dispersion is made without dispersing additives, emulsifiers or defoamers, so nothing beyond the wax enters the coating. It is a pourable liquid suitable for automatic dosing units.

Wood and joinery coatings

Anti-blocking on stacked or wrapped finished parts.

Flexographic inks

Rub resistance and blocking resistance on the reel.

Matting and abrasion resistance over the print.

It is specified where the formulation needs anti-blocking, abrasion resistance, matting, rub resistance in printing inks, and little influence on slip.

Handling and dispersion

WD OPE incorporates with a common high-speed stirrer. Add it while stirring rather than all at once: concentration differences at the point of addition are what cause agglomeration in a wax dispersion.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Plastic barrel, 30 kg net.

Storage: Storage temperature should not exceed 35 °C.

Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 Deuteron WD OPE is not classified as a dangerous product and does not require hazard labelling. The safety data sheet and the regulatory information sheet carry the detail your review will want.

Frequently asked questions

What is blocking, and how does WD OPE stop it?

Blocking is two coated surfaces sticking together under pressure, which shows up when parts are stacked, wrapped or reeled before the film has fully hardened. A hard, high-melting wax at the surface keeps the two films apart. Oxidized polyethylene at 128 °C is harder than standard PE at 101 °C, which is why this grade is the anti-blocking choice.

Will it make the surface slippery?

Not markedly. WD OPE has little influence on slip, which is unusual for a wax additive and is often the reason to choose it. If you want the coefficient of friction down, Deuteron WD PE or Wax TF are the grades to look at.

How does it compare with WD PE?

Same additive-free water dispersion, different wax. WD PE is standard polyethylene, 50 percent active, melting at 101 °C, and reduces friction. WD OPE is oxidized polyethylene, 46 percent active, melting at 128 °C, harder, better at anti-blocking and abrasion, and leaves slip alone.

Does it stay stable in the can?

Deuteron reports high storage stability across a wide range of coating systems. As with any dispersion, add it while stirring and confirm compatibility in your own system before committing a production batch.
