Deuteron Wax PP/2

Micronized polypropylene wax with a 138 °C melting point. Matting with a smooth feel, polishing resistance, and it holds silica and other heavy fillers against settling.

Home Products Deuteron Deuteron Wax PP/2

Deuteron Wax PP/2 is a micronized modified polypropylene wax with balanced properties and a good economic profile. It is a universal grade, usable in solventborne, waterborne and 100 percent systems including UV curable coatings, and in powder coatings.

It gives an elegant surface feel, good matting and strong mechanical stability. Its 138 °C melting point is the highest in the Deuteron micronized wax range, which is what lets it survive processes that would soften a polyethylene wax.

Two effects are specific to this grade. In combination with silica it improves polishing resistance and slows the settling of silica and other heavy materials in the can. In powder coatings it gives good degassing.

Applications

Wood and joinery coatings

Matting with a smooth feel and resistance to burnishing.

Metal coatings

Mechanical stability through higher process temperatures.

Flexographic inks

Surface protection on the printed film.

Overprint varnishes

Polishing resistance over the print.

Powder coatings

Degassing during cure and anti-blocking on the finished part.

It is specified where the formulation needs matting with a smooth and elegant feel, burnishing and polishing resistance, less settling of silica and fillers, anti-blocking, and degassing in powder coatings.

Handling and dispersion

Wax PP/2 disperses easily and can be incorporated with a common high-speed stirrer. In low viscosity systems a high shear dispersing unit may be needed to disperse it properly.

A pre-mix in water should contain a suitable cosolvent and about 2 percent of an emulsifier. Ethoxylated grades based on polysorbate or fatty alcohols with an HLB value of 15 are suitable.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Paper bag, 20 kg net.

Storage: 24 months at room temperature in dry conditions. Storage temperature should not exceed 35 °C.

Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 Deuteron Wax PP/2 is not classified as a dangerous product and does not require hazard labelling. The safety data sheet and the regulatory information sheet carry the detail your review will want.

Frequently asked questions

When is the 138 °C melting point worth paying for?

When the coating sees heat that would soften a polyethylene wax, which melts at 101 °C. Coil and can schedules, powder coating cure, and any process where the wax has to stay a discrete particle through the oven. Below that, Wax PE does the same job more economically.

How does it help with silica settling?

Used together with silica it improves polishing resistance and slows the settling of silica and other heavy materials. That is a formulation-stability benefit as much as a surface one: a matting silica that stays suspended is one you do not have to re-stir before use.

What does it need for a waterborne pre-mix?

A suitable cosolvent and about 2 percent of an emulsifier. Ethoxylated grades based on polysorbate or fatty alcohols at an HLB value of 15 work. Note that Wax PP/2 has no pre-dispersed waterborne equivalent in the way Wax PE has WD PE.

Does it work in UV curable systems?

Yes. It is a universal grade covering solventborne, waterborne and 100 percent systems including UV curable, as well as powder coatings.

Can I get the TDS and SDS for Deuteron Wax PP/2?

Yes. We send the Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and Regulatory Information Sheet on request, in the manufacturer's current revision. Use Request TDS or SDS above and tell us what your qualification review needs.
