Deuteron UV 1240 is a solution of bis(dodecylphenyl)iodonium hexafluoroantimonate in a reactive solvent. It is a photoinitiator for cationic polymerisation, which is a different cure mechanism from the free-radical acrylate systems that dominate UV coating.
It suits resins based on oxirane or oxetane groups, meaning epoxy resins and vinyl ethers. Adding it lets a formulator use UV light to drive the polymerisation of those systems.
Polymerisation is initiated by UV between 220 and 250 nm, with maximum absorption at 240 nm. Suitable light sources are high-pressure mercury lamps with strong emission in that band.
It contains no volatile solvents, so it does not add to film shrinkage. The carrier here is propylene carbonate; the companion grade UV 1242 uses a C12/C14 glycidyl ether instead.

Free-radical acrylate cure is fast but shrinks, is inhibited by oxygen at the surface, and stops the moment the lamp goes off. Cationic cure runs on an acid generated by the photoinitiator, so it continues in the dark after exposure, is not oxygen inhibited, and shrinks less. That is why it is chosen for adhesion on difficult substrates and for thick deposits.
One with strong emission between 220 and 250 nm, since maximum absorption is at 240 nm. High-pressure mercury lamps are the suitable source. An LED source emitting at 385 or 395 nm will not initiate this photoinitiator.
