Deuteron MM 110 is a preparation of very fine polymethylurea particles dispersed in DPGDA, a reactive diluent. It is a liquid dispersion, not a powder, and it was developed specifically for thin layer UV curable coatings and inks.

The particles are sub-micron: 0.6 microns at dv50, 0.8 at dv90, and 1.3 at dv99, with only about 1.2 percent of the material above 1 micron. That fineness is what lets it matt a thin UV film without the particles reading as texture or haze.

MM 110 is the higher-active, lower-viscosity version of the pair. It carries 25 percent active content at 220 mPas and includes a wetting agent, where MM 100 is 17 percent active at 3200 mPas with no wetting agent.

It mimics wax effects without bringing the drawbacks waxes carry into a formulation.

It is specified where the formulation needs gloss reduction in thin uv films, very low influence on viscosity, high mechanical and chemical resistance, scratch resistance and resistance to polishing, improved blocking resistance, and wax-like surface effects without using a wax.

Handling and dispersion

PMU chemistry is highly compatible across a wide range of systems, and MM 110 already carries a wetting agent, so it can be incorporated with a high-speed stirrer. It is shear stable in high shear processes but should not be ground in a bead mill.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Steel drum, 25 kg net or 220 kg net.

Storage: 24 months at room temperature in dry conditions. Storage temperature should not exceed 35 °C.

Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 Deuteron MM 110 is classified as a dangerous product and must be labelled. This is the DPGDA carrier rather than the PMU, and it sets MM 100 and MM 110 apart from the powdered Deuteron matting agents, which are not classified. Read the safety data sheet before handling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Deuteron MM 100 and MM 110?

Active content, viscosity and wetting agent. MM 110 is 25 percent active at 220 mPas and includes a wetting agent. MM 100 is 17 percent active at 3200 mPas with no wetting agent, which suits formulators who want to choose their own. The particle size is identical at 0.6 microns dv50.

Is it hazardous?

Yes. Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 both MM 100 and MM 110 are classified as dangerous products and require labelling, because of the DPGDA reactive diluent they are dispersed in. The powdered Deuteron matting agents are not classified. Read the safety data sheet before handling.

Can I use it if DPGDA is not acceptable in my formulation?

No. DPGDA is the carrier and it becomes part of the cured film, so the whole product is only suitable where that monomer is acceptable. If it is not, a powdered grade such as Deuteron MK-F6 is the route to matting a UV system.

Will it pass through an inkjet head?

The particle size is built for it: 0.6 microns at dv50, 1.3 at dv99, and only about 1.2 percent of the material above 1 micron. Inkjet inks are a stated application. Trial it against your specific head and fluid.
