Deuteron MM 823 is a compound of organic duromeric polymethylurea powder with PTFE. The PMU carries the matting and the durability, and the PTFE adds a protective slip effect on the surface.

That combination is the reason to specify it: it is for systems that have to be low gloss and abrasion resistant at the same time, where a matting agent alone would leave the surface vulnerable to scratching, scoring and polishing.

It works at a lower loading than the plain PMU matting agents, with a typical range of 1 to 3 percent against the 1 to 15 percent of the MK family, and it holds a low influence on viscosity even at the top of that range.

It contains PTFE. Where a fluorine-free additive is the requirement, use the plain PMU grades instead.

Dosage: A typical addition range of 1 to 3 percent. The level depends on the binder type, other additives, solvent content, layer thickness and film shrinkage, so determine it with a ladder study.

It is specified where the formulation needs scratch, scoring and polishing resistance, higher slip and lower friction values, gloss reduction, improved blocking resistance, and low influence on viscosity even at high loadings.

Handling and dispersion

PMU chemistry is highly compatible across a wide range of systems, so MM 823 can be incorporated with a high-speed stirrer without specific wetting agents or dispersing aids. It is shear stable in high shear processes but should not be ground in a bead mill.

In water-based systems with a low emulsifier content, a dispersing additive can be necessary to reach a proper dispersion.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Paper bag, 10 kg net.

Storage: 24 months at room temperature in dry conditions. Storage temperature should not exceed 35 °C.

Under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 Deuteron MM 823 is not classified as a dangerous product and does not require hazard labelling. The PMU polymer content is biodegradable; the PTFE content is not. The safety data sheet and the regulatory information sheet carry the detail your review will want.

Frequently asked questions

Does Deuteron MM 823 contain PTFE?

Yes. It is a compound of polymethylurea and PTFE, and the PTFE is what delivers the slip and friction reduction. If your formulation has to be fluorine-free, specify one of the plain PMU matting agents such as Deuteron MK instead.

How is it different from Deuteron MK?

MK is polymethylurea on its own and mattes at 1 to 15 percent. MM 823 adds PTFE for slip and surface protection, works at 1 to 3 percent, and has a coarser dv90 at 17.3 microns. Choose MM 823 when the finish has to resist scratching and polishing, not only reflect less light.

What loading should I start at?

Somewhere in the 1 to 3 percent range, set by your binder, solvent content, layer thickness and film shrinkage. Run a ladder study. Tell us the system and the gloss and durability you are targeting and we will suggest a starting point.

Do I need a dispersing additive?

Usually not. It incorporates with a high-speed stirrer in most systems. In water-based systems that are low in emulsifier, a dispersing additive can be necessary to get a proper dispersion.
