Polyurethane is the sizing chemistry you reach for when the film has to stay tough and stay clear. COIM's non-reactive non-ionic family is aliphatic and hydrazine free across all seven grades, and it is the largest single family in the FILCO range.

Aliphatic matters because aromatic polyurethanes yellow under UV. COIM lists non-yellowing films as an application characteristic, alongside improved stability across a wide pH range, resistance to moisture and impact resistance. Hydrazine free matters for a different reason: hydrazine is a CMR substance and its absence removes a regulatory question from the size formulation.

The seven grades are selected by polyol. FILCO 547 is the all-purpose polyester-polyol at 45 percent solids. FILCO 540 is the polycarbonate-polyol with increased tensile strength. FILCO 8000 is a polyester-polyol published for no discoloration. FILCO 8102 is the other increased tensile strength grade.

Three grades are matched to specific problems. FILCO 7601 carries a 104 degree F Tg and is published for PBT. FILCO 7805 is polycaprolactone polyol for increased compatibility with PA6. FILCO 8111 is polyether-polyol with high hydrolysis resistance, at the coarsest particle size in the family at 1700 nm.

It is also written as polyurethane dispersion sizing, PUD film former, aliphatic polyurethane dispersion, and thermoplastic sizing.

Impact loaded parts

Impact resistance is a stated characteristic of the family, with FILCO 540 and 8102 for increased tensile strength.

It is specified where the formulation needs aliphatic and non-yellowing, so the part does not discolor under UV, hydrazine free across all seven grades, stable across a wide pH range, which widens what the size bath can carry, polyol selectable, with polyester, polycarbonate, polycaprolactone and polyether options, and a 149 degree F span of Tg across the family, from minus 40 to 109.

Handling and dispersion

Applied at the forming line in a sizing bath. Polyurethane dispersions tolerate a wider pH range than most film formers, which is what makes them easier to combine with other size components.

Select on the polyol before anything else. It sets compatibility with the matrix polymer, and a polyester-polyol film in a wet application is the usual cause of a hydrolysis failure. FILCO 8111 is the polyether answer to that.

Tg spans minus 40 to 109 degrees F across the family. That is a wide enough range that two grades from the same family will behave very differently at line temperature, so name the process conditions.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Storage: Store in the original sealed container, protected from frost and from direct sun. Freezing destroys a water based dispersion permanently. Confirm the shelf life on the current data sheet for your grade.

Frequently asked questions

Why does COIM specify aliphatic and hydrazine free?

Aliphatic polyurethanes do not yellow under UV, which aromatic ones do, so the part keeps its appearance. Hydrazine free is a regulatory point rather than a performance one: hydrazine is a CMR substance, and a chain extender that avoids it takes a question off the table for the size formulation.

Which grade goes with PA6?

FILCO 7805. It is the polycaprolactone polyol grade and COIM publishes it specifically for increased compatibility with PA6.

My part sees hot water. Which grade?

FILCO 8111, the polyether-polyol grade with high hydrolysis resistance. Polyester polyols hydrolyze in sustained wet heat, which is why the polyether grade exists. Tell us the temperature and the duration and we will confirm with COIM.

What is the difference between non-reactive and reactive in this range?

These grades stay as they are supplied. The reactive family carries blocked isocyanate that unblocks at 266 to 320 degrees F and crosslinks, which raises temperature and hydrolysis resistance further. Choose reactive when the process reaches the unblocking temperature and you want that crosslink.
