FILCO 8000 is a waterborne non-ionic polyester-polyurethane dispersion used as a film former in sizings for continuous or chopped glass, carbon, basalt and mineral fibers. COIM publishes it at 35.2 percent solids with an average particle size of 400 nanometers and a Brookfield viscosity of 50 mPa s.
COIM's stated characteristics are a soft coating on the fiber and excellent strand integrity, which is the combination a line wants when the strand has to hold together through handling without the tow going stiff. The film has good solubility in styrene, so it also suits unsaturated polyester work where the size should dissolve into the resin.
The non-ionic dispersion gives superior stability at very acid or very basic bath pH, and COIM publishes wide compatibility with typical sizing additives. The matrix side is nylon, polycarbonate and polyurethane.
COIM publishes no dried-film mechanical data for this grade. For a published stiffness number, the soft reference is FILCO 547 at 2 MPa, and the anionic grades D2496, D2596, D2594 and D2476 run from 8 to 20 MPa.

Where the strand has to hold together through winding, conveying and chopping but the tow must stay soft, this is the grade COIM's own characteristics describe. Where a compact, stiff bundle is the goal, move to the anionic grades with published modulus.
The film is thermoplastic and non-reactive. Where the process should crosslink the film, look at the reactive polyurethane family instead.

Storage: Store in closed containers away from direct sun at 41 to 86 degrees F. Maximum suggested storage is 12 months from production in the original package, after which the product must be rechecked. Freezing destroys the dispersion permanently.
