Deuteron SF 505 is a micronized duromeric plastic powder based on polymethylurea. The synthesis gives compact particle structures with high hardness and a low coefficient of friction, and that combination is what lets an organic powder do the job a fluoropolymer usually does.

Deuteron states that the SF products can be used as a 1:1 offset to replace PTFE-based surface protection additives and waxes. For a formulator working through a fluorine-free reformulation, that is the practical starting point: match the loading and trial it.

SF 505 is the coarser of the two SF grades, at 7.0 microns dv50, 13.0 dv90 and 18.0 dv99. It is suited to thin and thick film applications alike, and the finer SF 707 is the choice where surface smoothness has to be higher.

It contains no halogens and no fluorine, and the polymer is biodegradable.

Dosage: A typical addition range of 0.5 to 4.0 percent. The level depends on the binder type, other additives, solvent content and the application parameters, so determine it with a ladder study.

It is specified where the formulation needs a reduced coefficient of friction, scratch and polishing resistance, low impact on gloss level at low dosages, a pleasant surface feel, recoatability, and less haze and settling than ptfe.

Handling and dispersion

PMU chemistry is highly compatible across a wide range of systems, so SF 505 can be incorporated with a high-speed stirrer without specific wetting agents or dispersing aids.

It is shear stable in high shear processes. Do not grind it in a bead mill: the particle size distribution is what produces the surface effect.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really swap PTFE for it one for one?

Deuteron states the SF grades can be used as a 1:1 offset to replace PTFE-based surface protection additives and waxes, so that is where to start the trial. Every formulation behaves differently, so run a ladder study around the offset rather than assuming it. Ask us for the Alternatives to PTFE technical information and a sample.

Is it a PFAS?

No. It is polymethylurea, an organic urea-based thermoset that is halogen free, with no fluorine in it. That is the reason the chemistry is used as a route away from PTFE in coatings.

How do I choose between SF 505 and SF 707?

By how fine the surface needs to be. SF 505 is 7.0 microns dv50 with a dv99 of 18.0. SF 707 is 4.0 microns dv50 with a dv99 of 12.0, so it stays smoother in a thin film. Both cover thin and thick applications and both dose at 0.5 to 4.0 percent.

Will it dull the finish?

Not much at the loadings it works at. Deuteron lists a low impact on gloss level at low dosages as one of its properties, which is what separates a surface additive from a matting agent. If you want gloss down as well, the MK matting grades are the ones to look at.

Does it affect recoatability?

It improves it. Recoatability is a common problem with PTFE and wax surface additives, because a low-energy surface resists the next coat. Deuteron lists recoatability as one of the properties the SF grades improve.
