FILCO D2596 is an anionic polyether-polyurethane waterborne dispersion used as a film former for continuous and chopped carbon fiber sizing, virgin or recycled. COIM publishes it at 32 percent solids and pH 8.0.

Its dried film is the moderate-stiffness member of the polyether pair. At 9 MPa 100 percent modulus, 31 MPa tensile strength and 320 percent elongation at break on ASTM D1708, it consolidates the tow without the brittle cut a very stiff film can give. COIM lists moderate stiffness, very good abrasion resistance and high strand and tow integrity that is still easy to disperse and wet during application.

The polyether backbone is the hydrolysis-resistant choice. A polyester polyol hydrolyzes in sustained wet heat, and the polyether route is how the family answers that. Its sibling D2594 is the same chemistry at high stiffness.

The anionic dispersion is published for enhanced electrostatic dissipation, high shear stability and compatibility with anionic or non-ionic bath additives. The matrix side is nylon, polyurethane and polycarbonate.

Chopped carbon fiber

Moderate stiffness holds a consolidated bundle against fuzz and splaying without a brittle, dusty cut.

Recycled carbon fiber

Published for virgin or recycled fiber. Reclaimed fiber needs a film that restores bundle integrity and feedability.

High compatibility with nylon, polyurethane and polycarbonate matrices.

The polyether backbone resists hydrolysis where a polyester grade would not.

Handling and dispersion

Applied at the fiber line or in a re-sizing bath. The anionic dispersion is published with high shear stability and is compatible with anionic or non-ionic additives. Confirm compatibility before adding a cationic component.

Selection runs matrix first, then stiffness. FILCO D2596 is the moderate polyether grade. Its sibling D2594 is the same chemistry at 12 MPa, and D2496 is the polyester alternative at 8 MPa where hydrolysis resistance is not the driver.

The film is thermoplastic and non-reactive. Where the process should crosslink the film, look at the reactive polyurethane family instead.

Packaging, storage, and regulatory status

Package sizes: Made to order in the pack size the line needs. Tell us the volume and we will confirm..

Storage: Store in closed containers away from direct sun at 41 to 86 degrees F. Maximum suggested storage is 12 months from production in the original package, after which the product must be rechecked. Freezing destroys the dispersion permanently.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between FILCO D2596 and D2594?

Stiffness. Both are anionic polyether-polyurethanes published for continuous and chopped carbon fiber, virgin or recycled. D2596 is the moderate grade at 9 MPa 100 percent modulus and 320 percent elongation, D2594 the high-stiffness grade at 12 MPa and 220 percent.

How does it compare with FILCO D2496?

Nearly the same published stiffness, 9 against 8 MPa, on a different backbone. D2596 is a polyether-polyurethane, the hydrolysis-resistant route. D2496 is a polyester-polyurethane and is also published for glass, basalt and mineral fiber, where D2596's data sheet names carbon only.

Does it work on recycled carbon fiber?

Yes. COIM publishes it for continuous and chopped carbon fiber, virgin or recycled. Reclaimed fiber comes out of pyrolysis bare, and the re-size restores the bundle integrity and feedability that converting needs.

What does anionic do for a chopping line?

The dispersion is published with enhanced electrostatic dissipation, which bleeds off the charge that makes loose carbon filament fly, cling and bridge. The high tow integrity limits how much loose filament forms in the first place.
