Waterborne 2K anti-graffiti lacquers for vinyl and synthetic leather

Waterborne two-component anti-graffiti lacquers run at a pot life of over eight hours, applied by anilox roller or doctor blade and dried at 140 C for one minute.

Those three numbers decide whether the system fits a synthetic leather line. Everything else about an anti-graffiti finish is performance, and performance is the easier half.

What the system is

A transparent two-component acrylic topcoat for PVC and PU synthetic leather, supplied in three sheens: matt, more matt, and gloss. Each is catalyzed with a matching crosslinker, and the crosslinked film is what carries the resistance.

The published grades are ROWAKRYL M-35200W matt, M-35252W more matt, and G-35294W gloss, each with ROWASET 63762 as the catalyst. The W in the grade code marks the waterborne version.

The catalyst is part of the specification

A two-component system reaches its stated scratch, solvent, and chemical resistance only when it is crosslinked, which means the matching crosslinker at the stated addition level. The base can be coated on its own. It will run through the line, dry, and look right on the roll, and it will not pass a cleaning test.

Treat the crosslinker as a line item in the specification and on the purchase order rather than as a consumable ordered separately. It is the same reason a 2K finish is quoted as a system: the two parts are one product.

Pot life sets how you batch

Over eight hours of pot life is the figure that makes 2K workable on a production line. It covers a shift, so a coater mixes against the run rather than against a short window, and a stoppage does not automatically cost the batch.

The window is still a window. Mixed material has to be used inside it, so the practical planning question is how much gets catalyzed at the start of a run and what happens to the remainder if the line goes down. That is worth answering before the first line trial rather than during it.

The application window

Anilox roller or doctor blade, then 140 C for one minute. Both application methods are standard on synthetic leather lines, and the choice usually follows what the line already runs rather than what the lacquer prefers.

The drying condition is the constraint worth checking first. One minute at 140 C sets the relationship between oven length and line speed, and the substrate underneath sees that same heat. On a printed or embossed material, confirm the base tolerates the dwell before the finish is specified, because the alternative is discovering it on coated stock.

What it resists, and what it removes

These are two different properties and they are worth separating, because a specification usually cares about one of them more than the other.

Resistance. High scratch resistance, good resistance to solvents and chemicals, and low soiling. This is the durability half: the surface holds up to wear and to whatever cleaning regime the operator runs.

Removability. Dried permanent marker or ballpoint comes off a coated artificial leather surface with a dry cloth, residue free. Spray paint is removed without residue in many cases, which is a qualified claim and stays qualified here.

The qualification is not a hedge, it is the specification. Spray paints vary widely in binder and pigment, so the honest answer is that the finish handles many of them and the way to know about yours is to test the actual products. For transit and public-space work, that means getting hold of what shows up on the vehicles rather than what is convenient to buy.

Where waterborne changes the picture

Anti-graffiti finishes have historically been solventborne, and the waterborne versions are the newer part of the range. Two things follow.

For a plant already running water, a waterborne 2K system removes the reason to keep a solvent line alive for one finish. For a plant running solvent, it is a candidate in a conversion rather than a drop-in: drying, wetting, achievable line speed, blocking, and adhesion all shift with the carrier, so the change is planned as a line trial. Running the solventborne and waterborne versions of the same finish together answers the process question and the performance question in one pass.

Where these finishes go

Anti-graffiti and easy-clean topcoats are specified where the surface is public and the marking is not accidental: transit seating and interior panels, seating in public buildings, and the vinyl and synthetic leather used across hospitality and healthcare surfaces where cleaning is frequent and aggressive.

The same chemistry family covers general easy-clean work on PVC and PU surfaces, where the requirement is soil release and cleanability rather than graffiti. Sheen selection tends to matter more in those applications, since the surface is being specified on appearance as much as on performance.
