Shellac is a natural resin secreted by the lac insect on trees in the forests of India and Thailand. It is harvested, refined and graded, and what reaches a formulator is a hard resin that dissolves in alcohol, dries by evaporation alone, and leaves a film with adhesion to surfaces that give most resins trouble.
P.A.T. Products has supplied shellac to North American industry since at least 1990, which makes it the oldest line in the company. We hold it in stock in the United States and ship in quantities down to a single bag, so a formulator running a small or intermittent requirement does not have to import a container to get material.
Two grades are stocked. Lemon #1 flake is the heat-refined workhorse: wax containing, light amber, and the grade behind stain-blocking primers, grinding wheel bond, sealants, wood finishing and French polish. Refined bleached shellac is the dewaxed, low-colour grade, a different material rather than a colour variant, with a different solubility, a much shorter shelf life and its own supply chain.
Both grades share one CAS Registry Number, 9000-59-3, because both are shellac. What separates them is the refining route, and that route is what decides which one a formulation wants.
