Fresh metal corrodes fast

Metalworking and protective packaging share a problem: a freshly worked or freshly machined metal surface corrodes fast, and copper and brass parts tarnish and pit before the next operation. Benzotriazole, tolyltriazole, and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole are the inhibitors that keep nonferrous metal protected in both settings.

Metalworking fluids

Soluble-oil, semi-synthetic, and synthetic metalworking fluids run past copper, brass, and bronze in machine components, fittings, and the parts being cut. The fluid has to protect those yellow metals in the sump and on the workpiece between operations.

Triazole inhibitors handle the yellow-metal side. Benzotriazole and tolyltriazole passivate copper and brass in the fluid, and tolyltriazole's better thermal and chlorine stability helps in fluids that run hot or see harsh water. 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT, CAS 149-30-4) is also used here: it forms an insoluble film on copper and other non-ferrous metals and is a long-standing nonferrous inhibitor in water-miscible fluids. For severe-duty and fully synthetic fluids, a 1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD-type) deactivator can carry both copper protection and extreme-pressure performance in one additive.

VCI packaging

Vapor-corrosion-inhibitor packaging protects metal that no one will treat directly, parts wrapped for transport and storage. Benzotriazole is a known volatile corrosion inhibitor for copper. Built into VCI papers and films, it keeps copper and brass surfaces bright through shipping and storage, so parts arrive without tarnish or surface corrosion. The same anti-tarnish action makes benzotriazole a common choice for protecting silver and copper, in both packaging and solution.
