Calcium stearate performs multiple functions simultaneously in polymer processing. In a single additive, formulators get a heat stabilizer for PVC, an internal and external lubricant for PVC and rubber, a mold release agent, and a processing aid. Understanding how each mechanism works, and how to use all of them, is the starting point for effective use of this material.
Heat stabilization in PVC
PVC degrades thermally through dehydrochlorination, the loss of hydrogen chloride (HCl). The process is autocatalytic: the HCl produced accelerates further degradation, causing discoloration and charring. Calcium stearate acts as an HCl scavenger: its calcium component reacts with the liberated HCl to form calcium chloride, removing the catalytic acid from the system and extending the processing window before degradation begins.
Used in combination with zinc stearate (the standard Ca/Zn stabilizer system), the two compounds act synergistically: zinc stearate provides rapid early HCl scavenging while calcium stearate extends the protection through the processing cycle.
Lubrication
Calcium stearate provides both internal and external lubrication. As an internal lubricant, it reduces intermolecular friction between polymer chains, lowering melt viscosity and reducing energy consumption in extrusion and calendering. As an external lubricant, it migrates to the polymer/metal interface, reducing adhesion to processing equipment and improving surface quality of the finished part.

- Thermoplastic processing: lubricant in polyolefin, ABS, and engineering polymer processing
- Powder coatings: anti-caking agent and flow modifier in dry blend systems
