In polymer formulation, flame retardancy is a non-negotiable performance requirement across electronics, transportation, construction, and consumer products. For decades, halogenated flame retardants (primarily bromine and chlorine-based compounds) were the default choice. They work. But growing evidence of their environmental persistence, bioaccumulation, and health impacts has triggered a wave of regulation that compounders cannot ignore.
The problem with halogenated flame retardants
HFRs are effective because halogen radicals interrupt the combustion cycle in the gas phase. The problem is that these same chemical properties make them persistent in the environment. Many HFRs do not readily biodegrade, accumulate in fatty tissue, and travel up the food chain. They have been detected in human breast milk, blood, and wildlife at increasing concentrations.
The health effects associated with HFR exposure include endocrine disruption, thyroid dysfunction, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, and adverse developmental effects in children. These are not speculative risks. They are documented in peer-reviewed literature and have driven regulatory action on both sides of the Atlantic and, increasingly, in North America.
Regulation in North America
The United States has taken a state-led approach. Washington, California, and several other states have enacted restrictions on specific brominated flame retardants in consumer products, particularly children's products, upholstered furniture, and electronics. Federal action has been slower, but the direction is clear. Canada, through its Chemicals Management Plan, has assessed and restricted several HFRs determined to pose unacceptable health risks.
For compounders supplying OEM customers in regulated markets (automotive, electronics, medical), the practical requirement is often ahead of the legal one. Supply chain sustainability requirements from major brands are driving the transition faster than legislation.
